Deeb/Martinez vs Sierra/Laynie Luck

Unfortunately for Sierra & Laynie Luck, they don’t even get a match graphic.

First thing I notice in this match is: Do Serena Deeb & Mercedes Martinez have a matching theme to their gear? But no, once you see them closer up you can tell that Serena’s gear is more of a green/turquoise and Mercedes’ gear is a light blue. Watching for this detail may seem frivolous but with pro wrestlers you do need to be aware of any Easter eggs hidden in their gear.

The RELUCTANT Good Teammate

Excalibur puts over right away that these two have an attitude of playing a game of oneupwomanship over each other. This is important to mention as this is their first match as a tag team off of YouTube. After Sierra tags out, Laynie Luck rushes in and manages to at least put Deeb in a position where the smart move is to make the tag whereas normally she likes to tease Mercedes with the tag. She takes a half-second pause before capitulating to the fact that tagging is in her best interest.

Martinez comes in and hits a nice spine buster on Laynie Luck. Martinez is pumped which Deeb uses this opportunity to tag herself back in. Deeb sets up Luck into an Indian Death Lock. Sierra runs in to clothesline Deeb but she ducks leaving Sierra to run right into Martinez who slams her onto her partner who’s still in the submission. Luck does manage to get to the ropes though.

Deeb bang

Just when it looked like they were getting on the same page.

From here it starts to appear like Deeb & Martinez are a pretty cohesive team as they start doing some sequences and double team moves together but just when these two seem to have found some common ground, Martinez goes to run off the ropes and hit Luck in the back of the neck with a running elbow but bumps into Deeb on the apron in the process and Serena is not pleased.

Martinez sets up the Brass City Sleeper. Sierra runs in to break up the submission but gets a forearm from Martinez. Deeb sneaks in and throws a knee block at Sierra and puts her in the Serenity Lock while Laynie Luck taps out to Mercedes. Stereo submissions ends the match again.

At some point you’re going to have diminishing returns from the same formula but in this match, Deeb & Martinez were able to throw a couple subtle wrinkles into the formula to keep keen viewers intrigued. It was good to see this story moved up to Rampage.

Note: Just because I give a match a low rating doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it for what it was nor is it necessarily a commentary on the competitors. Not all matches are meant to be 3-to-5 star matches.
